Changi Simei Community Club 10th Anniversary Celebration

Changi Simei Community Club

Changi Simei Community Club

Congratulations to Changi Simei CC on its 10th Anniversary. Another milestone for Changi Simei Community Club to celebrate 10 years and beyond; to grow from strength to strength.

I am pleased to blog on Changi Simei CC which is located in Simei, where I live for over 20 years with my family.

Over the years, we have seen the CC grow and expand, to meet the changing needs of the residents, not just in brick and mortar, but more importantly in connecting with residents”

Advisor to East Coast GRC Grassroots Organisations &
Member of Parliament for East Coast GRC.

In the 1960s, community centres in Changi district were more like outposts in the wilderness spreading far and wide; including on the offshore islands of Pulau Tekong and Pulau Ubin. Back then, community centres were simple, unadorned zinc and wooden buildings and dotted across farms and villages as central hubs of activities for the community.

Life was simple and the pace slower. The community centres offered a common space for entertainment, lifelong learning and social interaction. When resettlement came, people moved into modern flats located at brand new HDB towns. Villages were emptied out.

The ageing community centres became vacant buildings, as residents moved into metropolitan housing estates. Newer community clubs catered to the nouveau urbanised residents.

The residents were thrilled to have a community space to hold events and festive celebrations.

Today, the Changi Simei Community Club (CC) bears a marked difference in its physical appearance compared to other CCs while offering a cosy, family ambience. Throughout the past ten years, Changi Simei CC has kept its pace with the ever-changing community. As more condominiums and private housing became part of the landscape, the CC’s diverse range of programmes expanded to include lifestyle and leisure activities to attract a wider clientele. Space was a real premium. There was just not enough available land for a sprawling commumity club. Again, the management committee went on a creative bent, and came up with a unique solution of closing an existing road. Until today, it is the only design of its kind in Singapore.

The Changi Simei Community Club is like a second home to residents. Children laugh with friends as they skip their way to make it in time for ballet or taekwondo classes. Grandparents meet at the cafetaria for a drink and a chat with old friends. Other residents drop in to read newspapers or magazines offered in the four main languages. Young working adults attend yoga, cardio aerobics or dance classes at one of the two main dance studios. Residents can choose from more than 600 programmes, ranging from public speaking to yoga to dancing.

While big plans have been envisioned, some things remain the same. Changi Simei Community Club will continue to serve residents with even more enhanced service and comprehensive programmes to contribute towards the continued well-being of a happy and harmonious community.

To keep up with times, the “My Home in Simei” group on Facebook for online connection of the Internet-savvy young generation and the increasing number of active ageing senior citizens to link the social media network.

However, the online connections of the residents cannot substitute the neighbourhood “happening place” at the community club to live, work and play…where family, neighbours and friends meet in persons for the activities to participate in healthy living, learn and study, sports and games for recreation for everyone at the Changi Simei Community Club.

Crime Advisory on Unlicensed Moneylenders (UML)

Written by ongskjason on July 20th, 2011

Dear Residents,

Recently, there has been an increase in the number of loanshark-related advertisements. These loanshark syndicates advertise their loan schemes by pretending to be licensed moneylenders, putting up banners, leaving fliers or name cards on cars and residential units and publishing advertisements in newspapers. You can easily check if the moneylender stated in the advertisements is licensed by calling the Insolvency & Public Trustee’s Office at 63251439 or checking its website at http://app2.ipto.gov.sg.

While the Police will do its utmost in crippling syndicates and arresting runners, it is important that the community rally together to preserve the safety and security of our neighbourhoods by being vigilant and not borrowing from loansharks.

Loanshark debtors, problem gamblers and their families often have to struggle with financial and debt management problems as well as guilt, anxiety and even depression. Those who want a listening ear, or to obtain information and assistance on gambling problems can call the National Council on Problem Gambling at this helpline 1800 666 8668

Gateway to East Coast

Written by ongskjason on February 15th, 2011

Plans for the “Gateway to the East Coast” were unveiled on Saturday 15 Jan 2011, as part of the S$1 billion Remaking Our Heartlands (ROH) programmes for three areas announced a week ago by National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan.

Senior Minister S Jayakumar, who is an MP for East Coast GRC, said the plans once realised, will benefit not only those living in the East Coast but other Singaporeans too.

Plans to remake the area will focus on improving homes, revitalising the town centre and providing more recreational choices.

“Much of East Coast is an ageing estate. Therefore to make people feel that it is an exciting place to live and work in, you have to have constant upgrading. But this is not ad hoc upgrading. We are pulling all the pieces together, and many agencies have come forward. In five to six years time, when you come here, it will be completely transformed, it is exciting,” said Professor Jayakumar.

Over the next five years, the Bedok Town centre will be transformed into a vibrant new hub with a new air-conditioned bus interchange.

My first time being the Toastmaster-of-the-Day

Written by joy on October 3rd, 2010

You might be wondering what is ‘Toastmaster-of-the-Day’. Toastmaster-of-the-Day or simply TMD is actually a role in the Toastmasters meeting. The duty of the TMD is to act as a host for the meeting. What was my experience being the TMD for the first time? Well, I admit that I was feeling pretty nervous at the start. My hands were shaking when I greeted the audience. However, I gradually become very comfortable the more I spoke and I managed to calm down. The real challenge being a host is to keep the meeting lively. Although I  stick to the script, I am glad that the meeting went smoothly and everyone was happy. I believe experience will make one better. But to be better, one needs to take the first step. I would like to thank the president of Changi Simei Toastmasters Club for his encouragement while I was hesitating whether to take up this role sometime back.

About Toastmasters

Written by apple on September 23rd, 2010

It suddenly dawned upon me that some people may not be aware of what Toastmasters is about. Let me provide a brief introduction on this journey that I decided to take two years ago.

What exactly is Toastmasters?

No, we don’t make toasters!

From a humble beginning in 1924 at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, Toastmasters International (TI) is a nonprofit organization with the main mission to help people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. The organisation now has nearly 260,000 members in over 12,500 clubs in 113 countries, offering a proven – and enjoyable! – way to practice and hone communication and leadership skills.

Most Toastmasters meetings are comprised of approximately 20 people who meet weekly for an hour or two. Participants practice and learn skills by filling a meeting role, ranging from giving a prepared speech or an impromptu one to serving as timer, evaluator or grammarian.

There is no instructor; instead, each speech and meeting is critiqued by a member in a positive manner, focusing on what was done right and what could be improved.

There are currently 159 chartered club in Singapore and Changi Simei Toastmasters Club is one of the affiliated clubs of TI.
